WEEKLY WISDOM

Opportunity follows struggle.  It follows effort.  It follows hard work.
It doesn’t  come before.”

(
Shirley Steele)

Dear Parents:

We have more good news about our students’ successes.

Abigail Matt of our Second Grade took 3rd place in the State Fire Prevention Poster Contest.

On April 29 the annual Math Bowl was held at St. Bridget of Kildare and our 6th, 7th and 8th graders did well.

In the INDIVIDUAL competition Elizabeth King (6th grade) took third place; Sam Huber and Michael Ritter (7th grade) took 2nd   place and Casey Kuchem (7th grade) took 3rd place; Bradyn Jasper and Katelyn Voss (8th grade) took 3rd place.

In the ORAL Competition Elizabeth King and Logan Morton (6th grade) took 3rd place; A.J. Hurtig and Casey Kuchem (7th grade) took 1st place; Bradyn Jasper and Taylor Hoerstkamp (8th grade) took 4th place.

In the PROBLEM SOLVING TEAM COMPETITION our 6th grades came in 2nd place; they are Elizabeth King, Rehgan Marquart, Logan Morton, Jacob Wunderlich and Douglas Eggers.

There are still uniforms available of the “pre-owned” type.  We are going to have these available to you after the Field Day activities on May 16th.  If you have any more clean and “lovingly” used shirts, pants, or skirts to donate and didn’t get the items here before the fitting day, send them to the school office in a bag.

Events for the coming week.

May 9             Third Grade Mothers’ Tea in Parish Center                1:30 pm
2nd grade goes to Earth’s Classroom
May 13            International Day hosted by 5th grade
Classroom Play by 2H for K-3     (See note for times)
May 15            Kindergarten Graduation after mass                         8:00 am
Pre-School Recognition in Assembly Hall                   10 am
May 16            Field Day                                                                      9 am to 12:45 pm                         8th graders last day

As we near the end of the school year, I would like to pass on the following to you.

The teachers and I strongly urge you to have your children use a roller book bag instead of the ones on their backs.  We certainly know this is not the "cool" thing to do but it is the best for their health.  The textbooks of today are bigger than when you or I were in school and they're not going to get any smaller as the years pass.

Anything you can do to get your children to review some of what they have been taught will be helpful to them come August.  We have to spend time reteaching some of the prior year's lessons before everyone is ready for the new year.  There are many websites with just such material on them that can be done online or downloaded.

Most importantly, make sure that your children are able to attend the weekly Sunday mass.  This is the way for you to teach your children that our obligation as Catholics to attend mass each Sunday doesn’t go on vacation.  Going to mass every week is a great way to resolve arguments, pray for your family’s special intentions and to form habits that need to be part of every Catholic’s life forever.

God bless!
Ms. Burrus

Class Baskets for Summer Festival

As part of this years summer festival, we will again be doing a silent auction of class baskets.  We are asking each student to donate $5.00 towards the purchase of items to include in their class basket.  The baskets will be on display for bidding during the picnic.  Please turn in the money to your homeroom teacher by Friday, May 9th, and mark your envelope with student's name, grade and OLL Parish Festival.  Checks should be made out to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Festival.

If anyone has large baskets that you would like to donate, please let us know.  Thanks for your help in making this years parish festival a success!

Home & School Food Stand at the Fair - Please Help

The Home & School will again sponsor a food stand at the Fair.  If you worked last year, a paper was sent home with your child asking if you would like to do the same shift or a different one.  Please send these papers back as soon as possible.  Last year once again we had to close early due to not being able to fill the spots with a volunteer.  We are asking that you please consider helping out Home and School with this fundraiser.  Thanks to all of you who have helped in the past and for any future help you can give.  You are appreciated!  Any questions or to volunteer call Trissy Dyson at 239-2315.
